The International Geothermal Centre Bochum (GZB) with its close link to economy and politics indicates a great interest in characterizing the subsurface and the extraction of geothermal energy.

The GZB support association – nonprofit registered association, in combination with RWTH Aachen, Bochum University of Applied Sciences, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, Westphalian University of Applied Sciences, Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Center of Energy Managment from the University of Bayreuth as well as further institutions (EnergieAgentur NRW, the regional government authority of mining and energy industry Arnsberg, Bochum, Economic Union of Geothermal Energy, as well as economic corporations like construction industry, energy- and mining and steel-producing industries)

The International Geothermal Centre aims the following objectives:

  • Technology, Know-how and communication between the Universities, economics and politics depending on geothermal energy.
  • Implementation and networking of application-oriented geological research between Universities and industry; Building a business-oriented research facility with the International Geothermal Centre as an initial position for the creation and development of technology-oriented companies.
  • Education and training for engineers, geoscientists, miners, architects and craftsmen.
  • Retraining of staff of the mining industry in a mining near future technology ("from coal to heat mining").
  • Creation of a scientific network with partner universities and research institutions in national and international context.
  • Increase the level of awareness of geothermal energy; Means an information service for operators, planners, property developers.
