International Geothermal Association - IGA

The International Geothermal Association - IGA established its head office in the buildings of the International Geothermal Centre at the Bochum University of Applied Sciences in 2011. The IGA has its head office in Bochum and carries out its work globally.

The IGA was founded in 1988 as an independent association in New Zealand. The association operates worldwide and networks with over 5,000 members from more than 65 countries.

The objectives of the IGA are:

  • Supporting the development und enhanced use of geothermal ressources
  • Publication of scientific and technical information among geothermal specialists
  • Strategic consulting and cooperation with international organisations, governments, industry, etc.
  • Development and communication of standards, policies and criteria
  • Platform and Networking for Experts in geothermal Energy, governments, international organisations, industry, banks, insurances, etc.

The IGA pursues these objectives by organising information events, congresses, workshops, establishing databases, maps, a website, a regularly published IGA Newsletter and personal consultations.

It also is one of the co-founders of the International Renewable Energy Alliance (REN Alliance). The REN Alliance is an alliance of the five global associations of renewable energies. The REN's objectives are the political dialogue, consultation about potentials and perspectives of renewable energies, consultations about rules and political processes and exchange of information. The other members of the REN are the International Hydropower Association (IHA), the International Solar Energy Society (ISES), the World Bioenergy Association (WBA) and the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA).

The establishment and operation of the IGA Secretariat are funded by the german state Nordrhein-Westphalia and the EU and is accompanied by the Bochum University of Applied Sciences, the International Geothermal Centre, the EnergyAgency.NRW and the Geothermal Association.

Best Practices Guide for Geothermal Exploration

In 2013 the IGA Service Company conducted a project for the International Finance Cooperation (IFC). A number of workshops were conducted and informed financial institutions, banks, insurances and developers in Turkey on geothermal energy developments, its prerequisites, financial conditions and technical aspects. One project outcome included the revision of a Best Practices Guide for Geothermal Exploration which can be applied to geothermal exploration projects around the world.The 2nd edition of the Best Practices Guide is more comprehensive and is now available for download.
