The International Geothermal Centre focusses its scientific work on geothermal energy in several departments.

Advanced Drilling Technologies

Bo.Rex – Bochum Research and Exploration Drilling Rig

The department Advanced Drilling Technologies operates with an extensive technical equipment, especially with its own mobile drill rig and a high-pressure pump.

The department's focus is the development of innovative drilling techniques and the transfer of newly developed drilling tools into practice.

Infrastructure and Applications

In the department of Infrastructure and Applications issues and technologies for the supply of individual objects to whole municipal supply infrastructures are researched. This also includes applications for heat-, cooling- and power plant technology as well as the research on special applications such as geothermal storage technologies and the re-use of closed mining infrastructure.

The main focus lies on fundamental site and feasibility studies, as well as implementation planning of large shallow geothermal systems for the cooling and heating of buildings.

Reservoir Engineering and Rock Physics

In order to evaluate the efficiency of a project, a reservoir-model with the on-site properties has to be developed. The department of Reservoir Engineering and Rock Physics combine the results of geophysical exploration and the laboratory tests of rock samples to characterise the reservoir and develop a reservoir model.

Based on these models, simulations help to determine the best possible reservoir development and production. The results will assess the feasibilty and efficiency of a geothermal project.
